Transportation in Vietnam
Domestic Flights

Tan Son Nhut Airport (SGN) is about 5 mi/8 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, and Noi Bai Airport (HAN) is about 25 mi/40 km north of Hanoi. Domestic flights are available through Vietnam Airlines (and they're the best way to get between Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi).

Direct air service currently includes flights from Hanoi to Hue, Danang, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, Buon Me Thuot, Pleiku, Dien Bien Phu, and Nasan; and from Ho Chi Minh City to Buon Me Thuot, Danang, Dalat, Haiphong, Hue, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Pleiku, and Quy Nhon.

Flights between Hong Kong, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City suit the travel needs of most travelers connecting with flights from the United States.

National railway

Service is available on the northern line from Hanoi to Lao Cai via Thai Nguyen, Hai Phong, Uong Bi, and Lang Son. The full 296 km journey takes approximately nine hours, while Hai Phong is reachable in under four hours.

Service on the southern line from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City includes the well-known Reunification Express train. Stops include Vinh, Hue, Danang, and Nha Trang. The full trip takes approximately two days.

Sea travel

Maritime transport has been established to the seaports of Hon Gai, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Vung Tau, and Saigon. Hai Phong is the most important port, lying on the East-West and North-South international sea lanes. In recent years, the ports of Hai Phong, Da Nang and Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) have received international tourist ships each with upwards of 1,000 tourists on board.

Vehicles

Bus : Public buses can reach every conner of the country. The tourist buses are Japanese-made, comfortable and air-conditioned. They are also faster, more convenient and safer.

Car : For individual travelers , it is better to rent a car or a 4x4 with a driver. You should not drive by yourselves. Rental value is calculated on the travel distance. In this way, you never find any inconvenience caused by other vehicles. Your driver and guide are always at your disposition.

Motor: This vehicle is a favorite of adventurers. It is very convenient to travel by motor in the cities and rural areas. Motors for rent are available in the big cities such as: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh city, Danang, Sapa. Renting requires your passport or a deposit.

Cyclo : Just as in all other cities in Asia, like the "beca" or trishaw in Penang, and the tuk tuk in Thailand, cyclos (also called trishaws) are widely available in Hanoi and HCMC to give tourists rides around the city. They are a nice relaxed way to see a city. Cyclos in Hanoi are now mainly for tourists, although many locals do still use them from time to time. The riders ring their bells constantly trying to attract attention, especially near tourist attractions.
